It's a case of Manhunter/The Red Dragon; there's room for both.

With Purple Noon you get young Alain Delon at the peak of his vitality and the sumptuous location shooting of coastal Italy. With The Talented Mr. Ripley, you get Jude Law at his most lively and charismatic, and the homosexual subtext of Highsmith's novel.

They complement one another, a person can enjoy both.
