How beautiful...

..it was Italy 50 years ago, untainted by horrible concrete monsters on the seafront; no traffic jam; no fake Centurioni ripping off tourists near the Colosseum; I'm Italian, I know what I'm talking about.
..it was the rigging of sailboats at that time, no winching devices, no plastics, all brass, wood and hemp ropes; no radars, LORANs, GPS, nasty orange rubber dinghies; it all relied on sailor's ability - and muscles.
..it was the young Romy Schneider. Did any of you spot her? She was in the very first scene, uncredited, probably at her first screen appearance. Radiant beauty, indeed.

Ahhh!!!! You're making so nostalgic for the past now! Some of the best cinema is from Italy in the 50s and 60s. Yes, life has changed radically, and not for the better. Romy was great. I'm more of a Monica Vitti and Anna Magnani fan myself.

I agree with everything you said, Myollnir, only Romy Schneider was, of course, already an international star at the time, having starred in the "Sissi" trilogy (or quadrilogy or whatever it was :)), filmed in 1955-57.

The fact that she accepted a very minor role, and uncredited, may have something to do with the fact that she was Delon's girlfriend at the time.

Delon & Schneider were engaged and it broke her heart when things did not work out. Years later they made another movie together, "La piscine" aka The Swimmingpool.

Hi BlueGreen,

"Sissi" is only a trilogy and still is very popular in several German countries (in Germany it's usually aired during the Christmas days). For some strange reason they released a 4 disc set in the US, so "Sissi" is combined with the other historical Romy Schneider movie from the mid fifties about the young British Queen Victoria and her love for Albert which has nothing to do with "Sissi". But it's nice to watch.

Alain Delon was considered the French James Dean at the time.
They met in 1958 when they were both making the movie "Christine" and lived together for 6 years until 1964. Schneider followed him to Paris, learned the language fluently and became a very popular French actress and international star.
Alain Delon was the great love of her life and it broke her heart when he married Natalie Delon, the mother of his first son Anthony Delon, also an actor.
