How was a movie such as this received in the South in 1960?

Were movies such as this allowed in theaters in the South?

reply

Were movies like this banned in the South? No, there wasn't any real mechanism for that. However, independent movie theater owners (and the studio owned theater chains were gone by 1960) could refuse to book them and often did. So it would depend on the temper of your local theater owners.

Yeah...I'm gonna guess that it wasn't well received by many who were on the opposite side of the burgeoning civil rights movement in the south at the time. I imagine it would have been risky for a white theatre owner to show it for fear of social or criminal retaliation.
