The dreaded "Govahnah" Mcquire episode

Apparently, sometime back in the early 60's, at a network board meeting, somebody said, "Wouldn't it be hysterical if we made a show that annoyed the Hell out of people for 30 minutes?" And then the casting call went out...

We need an "actress" that is annoying, interfering, condescending, manipulating, arrogant, ugly as sin, has a voice more disturbing than nails on a chalkboard, has crazy eye, a bad hairstyle, is fat, pronounces the letter B as "bay", and most importantly, walks bent forward as if she has a large metal hoopajoop inserted in her nether regions.

And Shirley Booth fit the bill perfectly.

But the board must have realized, although it was the most annoying thing ever broadcast, they added another character that was even more arrogant and condescending than Hazel (as if that was even humanly possible) named "Deirdre".

It seems as if as the show went on, it wasn't annoying enough. It needed a little push to the point it could actually be used to induce vomiting. So they must have hired the best writers in the world to come up with the ultimate puke factor.

Hence the Governor Mcquire episode. Or as Shirley Booth would say "Govahnah" Mcquire. In order to get the desired effect and effectively make a show that could actually induce vomiting, the combined genius of the writers came up with a song Hazel wrote for the Govahnah. Then they put it over the top by having Shirley Booth "sing" it. Several times.

OMG I can't help but laugh my @ss off reading your post. Yes, I do find Hazel's personality annoying at times. I especially find her annoying when she wants everything to stop so she can get what she wants. Not sure of the episode you are speaking of, have missed a few and when I do watch it, it doesn't keep me captivated enough to constantly pay attention. I like the show but for some reason I cannot get past the glitchy high pitched noise that comes out of some episodes (no, I am not speaking about Hazel's voice). The red tint that seems to dominate the color is also distracting to me.

I find the show kooky at best and a guilty pleasure to a certain degree and I agree I get annoyed watching it a lot. For some reason the annoyance of it is like a train wreck, I don't hate the show but I don't particularly have a fondness for it either but I keep turning it on day after day while I am moving about in the morning.

Deidra is just too uppity for me to pay attention to and Hazel is to scheming and know it all for me to take serious. The wife is a sweet lady but a pushover where Hazel is concerned. The husband is the character, I guess many don't like but I do. I like him because he often times stands up to Hazel half @ssed.

If this show annoys you, I'd love to find out what you think of I Dream of Jeannie, MASH, Frasier, or anything that has aired on CBS since 2006.

While the show takes a turn for the worse once the green carpet arrives, this one at least doesn't involve the new family. Seriously, who the heck wanted to look at green carpet??

Most TV after 2006 sucks, wait make that 1996 for the most part. I like current drama's but I am a classic TV person.
This show is like a train wreck for me, annoys me and I want to turn away but I just keep on looking at it. Jeannie, MASH, and most classic shows I enjoy. Frasier, it is funny I don't like it during the day but late at night I actually enjoy it.

You think green carpet was annoying, I remember my parents had avocado green furniture in the early 70's. That was horrid to look at green wooden furniture. Seems like the 60's and into early 70's yellow and green were everywhere in houses....yuck.

I just keep on watching Hazel, Perry Mason, Bachelor Father, The Bob Newark Show and Mary Tyler Moore. Never tire of these classics...
Today's TV is just horrible!!!

reply

That's Bob NewHART.
I don't think he ever lived in NJ, LOL.

But do agree--today's TV stinks!

I never watched Hazel & discovered it on Antenna TV. I like it enough to watch it when I'm home.

Not to give away my age, I use to watch Hazel (the first 2 seasons)in the summer. Then starting with the 1963-64 season, I was old (with my Mom's OK) enough to stay up and watch the show. In Los Angeles (where I grew up)the show was on Thursday nights at 9:30 p.m.
After 50 years (the series went off in 1966), I still love watching her show.

I was born before show but a baby when it aired. We started getting w/cable, AntennaTV in January. I don't watch that much television, older brother who lives in apartment downstairs told me about Decades Channel. I caught the episode of Love American Style on Decades TV here in Boston area a few months ago, that was pilot for Happy Days.
Decades has different themes per day or week. I loved Johnny Carson & am watching ? Episode that must be early 80's with Neil Simon & a very young Bill Maher.
Episode has 1975 & guests that aren't on it. Comcast TV Guide is wrong.
Some series are classics. Now that Carson is over, Family Ties is on & I don't think it is funny.
The Newhart that's on after this is the 1980's show set in Vermont. I watched that when it was on & will most likely be asleep when it's on at 1 am EDT.
I think Hazel is classic & still funny.
You're probably 4-6 years older than I am. I can't believe how old I am, I still feel like a teenager sometimes, except for parents & other close family that have passed. Age is only a number.
