the cinematography...

did anyone notice how much this film's cinematography and mise-en-scene influenced kubrick! i saw the shining before i watched this movie, but i immediately recognized the almost exactly similar shots. the quick zoom in, jump cuts, hallway tracking, and overall feel was spot on. its kind of interesting when you think about how much of a role the masion itself played in both films.

Yeah, that's an interesting point. Where would American filmmakers be, without the French New Wave?

reply

Well, this is pretty far from new wave actually, apart from time and place... I think Resnais has a style that is full of nostalgia towards "old-time cinema" at the time, that is.

well, kubrick stated "the shining" was visually influenced by bergman's "the silence" (which features a nearly vacant hotel) and lynch's "eraserhead" (which he made the entire cast and crew watch before filming).

i can see how you'd make the connection, though, considering the location and the costuming of certain key scenes.

I was immediately reminded of The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut.
