Red Poofballs!

I'm watching this right now and so far my one and only complaint is the red poofballs on the Albatross crew's sailor hats. The hats themselves are fine, but the red balls on top make the crewmen look goofy and impossible to take seriously as henchmen.

"I mean, really, how many times will you look under Jabba's manboobs?"

*shrug*

I think it was the style at the time. Or the costume maker was told to inject color into the film.

That was a typical touch to some uniforms. Check out Gene Kelly's hat in "Anchors Away", during the sequence with Jerry the Mouse.

I've seen the pompoms in other films with period uniforms.

EDIT: From Wikipedia...

Small pom-poms may be used to adorn hats (such as Tam o' Shanters and some styles of the tuque), socks, fringed dresses, and other kinds of clothing.

Pom-poms form a conspicuous part of the uniform of French naval personnel, being sewn onto the crown of their round cap. Belgian sailors wear a light blue version.

Definitely the thing that makes you go, what the...?
But it is the thing I remember most, the uniforms and that red ball.

Uniforms are not always designed for maximum macho effect. Scottish and Greek soldiers sometimes wear skirts (kilts), and those guys kick ass.
