I preferred Thompson version.

In my opinion I thought the original Cape Fear was more suspenseful than the remake. It's not that I didn't like Scorsese version, I felt it was a bit self indulgent in places.

It just the shame that Thompson didn't get on and make better films after this classic. From watching his earlier films he had shown promise with like Tiger Bay, The Guns of Navarone and this film.

I agree. I thought the original was better too1 It built up suspense and tension in a subtle way without having to resort to the all out cartoon violence of the remake.

Don't get me wrong, I like the remake (and saw it first) and have no problem with violence in films, i just preferred the mood of the original, and found Peck a much more likeable Bowden than Nolte (although I'm sure that was Scorsese's intention!!)

Tuco: I like big fat men like you. When they fall they make more noise.

I felt that Scorsese was too big a director to direct Cape Fear.

Same here. Remember he only made it because it was part of the deal with Universal when they agreed to finance The Last Temptation of Christ in 1988.
They told him they would bank-roll Temptation for him as long as his next film was a commercial one.

Good commentary.

it's pretty cool.

I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, who said, "... I drank what?"

This version is superior :-)
