Question about the logic of this movie

When Joe goes back to "square" things with his father-in-law, he makes reference to the $500 his father-in-law lent them to get back on their feet and how they spent most of it on booze. I confess I'm somewhat confused as to exactly when he lent them that money. Presumably, he kicked them both out after the night they got drunk on him and Joe trashed the greenhouse, so he surely didn't do it then. But when we first see Joe tell Kirsten they;re going to ask him for a loan, the next scene we see is of Joe working for him -- which kind of makes it look like he didn't do it when they first went to him, but rather offered Joe a job. Can someone clear this up?

It could have been a scene that was edited out of the final cut.

I just watched the movie up to the squared up scene, The 500 dollars is never mentioned before that scene

Oh GOOD!,my dog found the chainsaw

I have a feeling it was before we see them living with the father. They probably asked for a loan, drank it away and then showed up to his house when they had no other options.
