Great Lemmon and Remick

Kim Novak was first offered the role that Lee Remick performed so brilliantly.

In a year of great performances, Lee competed with Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Geraldine Page and the winner Anne Bancroft. They are all dead now and would be terrific if the Academy would release who finished 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th. All were strong contenders. I would have voted for Hepburn in Long Day's Journey Into Night not only the best performance of the year but Hepburn's greatest performance of her career. Bette for the rest of her life contended Joan Crawford worked against her winning. There is no proof of it. In fact if Crawford had that clout she would have gotten herself nominated.

Jack Lemmon brilliant in this film lost to Greg Peck.

I would have voted for Peter O Toole in his legendary Lawrence of Arabia. Again would be great who would have been 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th in the voting. O Toole was given an Honorary Award and Lemmon won for Save the Tiger. Lemmon should have won for Some Like It Hot but lost that year to Charlton Heston for Ben Hur.

I have yet to see the films by other actress nominees; but Remick in this film is absolutely stellar. Maybe one of my favourite performances by an actress so far.

I am sure to watch other films by her because I hadn't heard of Remick before I saw Days of Wine and Roses.

I'm watching it now (first viewing) and yes, both of them gave excellent performances.
