For so-called "family" movies, many of the studios still think full-screen is all people want.
In my country (Australia), the first Harry Potter movie was only released on DVD in full-screen at first. No widescreen option at all.
It took a lot of organised complaint from the public -- petitions, co-ordinated letter campaigns and the like -- before Warner Bros backed down on their decision and gave us a widescreen transfer, and then they only did it with very bad grace and a bout of public sulking. (They bundled the widescreen version with the soundtrack CD, and put a price tag on it that was more than twice the price of the fullscreen version.)
