Quotes

These last few words said by Gil and Steve are heart wrenching:

Gil Westrum: Don't worry about? about anything. I'll take care of it, just like you would have.
Steve Judd: Hell, I know that. I always did... You just forgot it for a while, that's all.

This one is great too:

Elsa Knudsen: My father says there's only right and wrong - good and evil. Nothing in between. It isn't that simple, is it?
Steve Judd: No, it isn't. It should be, but it isn't.

That's one of the things I love most about Peckinpah, how he could make such raw, heart-wrenching poetry out of the simplest dialogue.

reply

Gil Westrum: 'Partner, do you know what's on the back of a poor man when he
dies? The clothes of pride - and they're not a bit warmer to him
dead than they were when he was alive. Is that all you want,
Steve?'
Steve Judd: 'All I want is to enter my house justified'.

Billy Hammond: 'You better cut yourself a switch, Mr. Longtree - I don't think
you could handle me bare-handed! But you're gonna get a
chance to try - directly'

Elder Hammond: 'We'll shoot 'em when they rise up...'
Billy Hammond: 'Ain't you got no family honor?'

Gil Westrum: 'That's bank money, not yours'.
Steve Judd: 'And what they don't know won't hurt 'em? Not them - only ME!'

Bank Manager: 'I expected a much younger man'.
Steve Judd: 'Well, I used to be. We ALL used to be'.
(boy, do I know that feels sometimes...)

'We all dream of being a child again--even the worst of us. Perhaps the worst most of all...'
