RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY at Cannes

Sam Peckinpah's first masterpiece will be among other classic films to be screened at this year's Cannes Film Festival. It's ashame I don't live anywhere near France. I would love to see this film on the big screen.

We saw Ride the High Country in film class today and it was SO good on the big screen. DVDs be damned, there is NOTHING like watching movies on a big screen, with an audience, a good sound system, and in the dark.

My favorite class at college last year was History of Film. We got view films like The General, Citizen Kane, Rebel Without a Cause, and Psycho on the big screen. It would have been nice to see Ride the High Country as our final film, but NO! It had to be Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I admire the film, but it's not THE best film from 1969. That honor goes to The Wild Bunch and Midnight Cowboy. Also, I was able to see The Wild Bunch at a recent screening at the Fargo Theater. I don't think I'll ever watch the film again....until the 2-Disc Special Edition arrives next year in the Peckinpah box-set.

Can you believe Ride the High Country was my first Peckinpah film? There's so much I want to see and I have a huge list of movies. I'm taking two film history classes this quarter-Hollywood & the 60s and a history of film class that covers the 50s up to Easy Rider and Midnight Cowboy. We're switching tacks and instead of watching Italian and British films, the new instructor will cover Japan (Kurosawa of course), Canada, Cuba and E. Europe. I can't wait to see The Wild Bunch.
