Metal cage elevator?

Am I justified in believing that the cage-like apparatus facing the front desk of "The Shady Rest" is an elevator?

I can't recall ever seeing it used,

Why would a 2 storey(I believe) hotel need an elevator in the first place?

Did any of the characters ever assert that it was broken(and or how the misfortune came about)?

My apologies if this topic has already been dealt with.

It was one of those things Uncle Joe acquired because he thought it added "class" to the hotel. It never worked during the series except possibly for one guest who may not have been of this world. He also added his Injun statue and non-working telephone to the lobby for the very same reason.

Thanks for the response.

Should I understand, then, that what you describe was revealed in some early episodes?

What did you mean by "one guest who may not have been of this world"?

reply

I believe it was brought up in the first episode?

As for the guest who may not have been from this world...in a late season 4 episode, a man checks into the Shady Rest who comes off as being very strange. I recall that Kate and Uncle Joe heard the sound of the elevator from another room. I haven't seen the episode in years, so I vaguely recall Uncle Joe believing the guest is an alien. Perhaps someone else on the board remembers this episode better than I do.

Oddly enough, I stumbled upon and then watched the episode "What's a Trajectory?" on YouTube last night.

It's the 14th episode of season 3.

I copied the episode's IMDB synopsis below.

(Arthur O'Connell had the role of Mr. Reynolds.)

"It's been close to a month since there have been any guests at the hotel. So Kate is surprised when a Mr. Reynolds checks in, he who walked to the hotel from Stuben's Bluff instead of taking the train. To Kate and the girls, Mr. Reynolds seems like a warm, friendly and kind man. Despite paying in cash and reserving the entire hotel solely for himself so as not to be disturbed, Uncle Joe however doesn't trust him - how can he trust anyone who likes to walk? Uncle Joe thinks he's a criminal on the run from the law. So when Uncle Joe hears that the Benton Bank was recently robbed of $3,000, Uncle Joe is certain Reynolds is the robber. Uncle Joe does whatever he can to bring Reynolds in to the authorities, more for the $500 reward money than to see justice served. Will Uncle Joe get his man, and if so how will he get Reynolds to the police?"

This MORE or LESS sounds like the episode to which you're referring.

Although there was no "elevator action" whatsoever in this one, at one point, lighthearted jokes are made that Mr Reynolds is an alien.

I just looked it up. It's season 4, episode 28. The episode is called "That was the Night That Was." Again, you only hear the elevator going up, but you never see it.

Thanks for the information!

I've dug up the clip on YouTube:

and I will watch the episode tonight.

Finally watched the episode in question.

Likable lead actor.

Would have made for a great Halloween episode.

Love that camel fraternity into which Uncle Joe pledged.
