...that Cathy would (still) want birds as pets after her experiences! I just do not find that believable---or that Mitch would agree to bring them along in the car, especially with Melanie there, and so traumatized. I don't think any of them would even want to *look* at birds again for years after that. I think they would have developed an aversion to avians, to some degree.

A dog owner can be afraid of pit bulls and be traumatized when they're attacked by one, but still love their own dog.
So yes, it makes sense that the kid would want to keep her pet bird. What doesn't make sense is the adults agreeing to take the birds along without a quibble, a kid may believe that their darling would never turn on them but the adults ought to know that under those circumstances no bird could be trusted!
