Heart-warming film

Such a wonderful film. Although considered a comedy, I found it to be very sad and nostalgic; handling the death issue of a loved one to a child. The Stella Stevens/Jerry VanDyke part was the only comedy. Dina Merrill as the snobbish girlfriend wanting to send Eddie away was perfectly casted. The theme music played was excellent and should have been Oscar-nominated. A lovely film, under-appreciated by critics. This was superior to the fluff of the TV series based on this film. Glad TCM airs this on Father's Day.

I agree. It was an all around family film with comedy and drama.

It's hugely underrated: the story, the actors' performances, and the laugh-aloud moments. I enjoy this movie each time I see it.

i loved this movie when I watched it as a kid, and watching it again as an adult the magic is still there. Yes, it is a very good, bittersweet comedy.
