Angie's Apartment

Did anyone else think that Angie's apartment seemed really nice for someone who could barely rustle up $200 a few days before? I know it's just a movie but I don't see how she could afford that and all the furniture, pots and pans, etc.

Maybe that was the day before payday, lol....

She worked at Macy's, so I guess she charged everything plus got employee discount, LOL. But yeah, when I saw the movie first time, I thought the same thing. Pretty nice wardrobe too for a salesgirl.

jones7418, I thought she dressed like Jacqueline Kennedy and the bracelets were standard "Natalie Wood". Since she worked at Macy's I thought she just used her Employee Discount!

A little bit. But its clear from the film that she went to great lengths to make it somewhere she could be proud of.

Me too, I though it was a bit too cosy... and yet, we don't know exactly how long she has been living there. I can very well picture her, saving her money to slowly acquire all the nice little things of her home - like the cushions, or the art modern paintings on the wall. At a more "symbolic" level, it also shows she has found indepedence and a place of her own.

Standard fantasy Hollywood version of the New York Apartment! I personally can't think of a TV show or movie, not featuring a rich character, where the apartment fit the income level of the character(s).

True, I can't help to think of Carrie Bradshaws iconic Manhattan apartment in Sex and the City. She manages to scurry up her rent money as well as buying hundreds of dollars worth of shoes and high end fashion on a article writers salary.

She's clearly living in a studio -- and rents for those, way back in 1963 were low, and totally in keeping with her income. In another thread someone pointed out that she was earning 2.00/hr. that's $16.00/day (before tax, obviously) but she was probably getting overtime, too; and at 80/wk she could easily afford an apartment. The formula then was 25% of your annual salary (before tax) in rent.

Keep in mind -- she was in a walk up apartment, not a "luxury" high rise. And in a low income neighborhood.

I think Julie gave her the money--do you see his reaction when Dominick and Mom were ganging up on her when she wanted to leave?

Besides, what does he spend money on?

reply

My guess is that her family helped out a lot, despite their feelings about her moving out.

Maybe her parents slipped her some cash, the way that the guy's parents slipped HIM some cash earlier in the film.
