Zelda?

In the second to last scene (the dinner-date at Angie's apartment), why did Rocky call Angie 'Zelda' when she was trying to pour him that muddled scotch drink?

reply

Maybe I picked it up wrong, but I thought he called her 'Zenda', in reference to Rocky's earlier comparison of himself to The Prisoner Of Zenda when they were hiding from Angie's brothers?

reply

He was jokingly referring to her as Zelda as in Zelda Fitzgerald, F. Scott Fitzgerald's notoriously alcholic wife. It was his way of making fun of her for not knowing how to mix drinks when Zelda most assuredly would.

reply

Good point but I doub't that both of them will ever know that Zelda exists even F.Scott.

reply

I had a feeling it was that, but the reference seemed wasted on account of its obscurity.

reply

In 1963 the reference wouldn't have been nearly so "obscure." I understood it, and I think the contemporary audience for that movie would almost all have gotten it as well.

I thought McQueen's earlier line about the USO was the funniest thing in the movie. I really was almost rotflmao.

Consider that in 50 years an audience might "get" a reference to Martin Scorsese or Meryl Streep, but will they remember that Kristen Stewart cheated on Robert Pattinson? Some things have more staying power than others.

reply

Ha... yeah, when he called her that, I did a double take and was like, "I thought her name was something else... erm... what was it again?"

I could have sworn I heard "Zelda" too, though it could be Zenda.

reply

No, he said Zelda. He was funny and showed he was not stupid. Was upset that she had alcohol and then showed she did not know what went with scotch! Told her, "If you are going to run a den of iniquity you should know how to mix drinks." That was really funny and cute!

But, he did say Zelda.
