That constant sonar 'ping' sound was cool at the time, but...
seems really dated today.
As many folks know, especially folks who read material like Tom Clancy's, that "active" sonar ping just screams, "Here I am!".
Modern sonar (even in the '60s) uses passive technology - just listening. About the only time active sonar is ever used is for targeting.
