Where were Sharkey, Patterson and the doctor in the 2nd season?

Seaman Patterson (Paul Trinka) and the unnamed Seaview MD (Richard Bull) were well-established characters in the 1st season, but were AWOL in most 2nd season episodes. Chief Sharkey (Terry Becker)-brought in the 2nd season to replace Chief Curly (the late Henry Kulky)-also missed several of the latter 2nd season episodes. However, all three rejoined the show in the final two seasons. Meanwhile, Stu Riley* (Allan Hunt) went ashore after the 2nd season ended. Any fans know the reason?

*Do you suppose that Stu Riley could have been an ancestor of Ensign Kevin Riley (Bruce Hyde) on the 1st season of STAR TREK?

Terry Becker had a contract dispute with Irwin Allen. Becker wanted more money. Allen initially said no and intended to replace Becker. However, Allen couldn't find another actor he liked as well and ultimately relented to Becker's demands. Allan Hunt was drafted and went into the (real) military. Irwin Allen said he would leave the part open for Hunt, but Voyage was cancelled before Hunt's tour of duty ended.
