Syndication in the 1970's

This show had good ratings for 3 seasons in the 1960's and was a commercial success, yet I don't recall it getting much syndication on TV in the 1970's.

I lived in an area where we picked up TV from Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Youngstown Ohio.

Stations from those areas played syndicated reruns of Star Trek, Lost in Space, Batman, but I only recall seeing a couple eps of VTTBOTS in the 1970's. Compare that with Star Trek, which was on tons of stations, throughout the 1970's and 1980's.

Was VTTBOTS priced out? Was no one interested? Or were there TV markets where they did show VTTBOTS?

Some shows that were big in the 1960's didn't get much syndication...Man From UNCLE comes to mind.

Definitely it's been on TV since the 1990's a few times...I recall it being on Scifi channel in the mid-1990's.

But I am wondering about the 1970's syndication.

It was the 1970's syndication runs that really permanently engraved a number of TV series into the collective consciousness:

Star Trek
Lost in Space
Batman
Wild Wild West

Whereas a number of other shows that were popular in the 1960's, such as Man From UNCLE, Ironside, Rat Patrol, etc. didn't get rerun much in the 1970's and so they are less well known.

So the question remains:

Anyone know if VTTBOTS was widely syndicated in the 1970's?

I remember it being on in the Philadelphia region in the early 70s. It was shown on a UHF channel as part of a children's late afternoon lineup.

The UHF channels would show cartoons starting about 2pm until about 5pm, then they would swich over to the hour long action/sci-fi shows.

Voyage played for a few years (I'm guessing it was like 1972-1975) at around 5 or 6pm. Since there were more episodes they would show it 5 times a week. I also remember Lost in Space being run fairly frequently but other Irwin Allen shows, like Land of the Giants or Time Tunnel were usually relegated to once or twice a week.

The last I remember Voyage being on, one UHF channel was showing it at 5am during the week and that was in the mid 80s. (I remember cataching is when I was a night security guard.) After that period, I didn't see it again until the DVDs came out.

He who fights and runs away, lives to run away again!

It aired out here in California every so often on Sundays and sometimes during the week on UHF channels. It had some syndication going on. How much, I can't recall.

I appreciate all these reports of UHF stations playing VTTBOTS reruns in the 1970's.

The UHF years in the 1970's, when so many TV stations had a lot of air time and liked to fill it with reruns and old movies, was an interesting time to watch TV.

Especially the 'independent' stations, non-affiliated with any networks...those stations made it possible for a lot of us to enjoy stuff we were too young for in the 1960's.

I still suspect that Star Trek and LIS got wider syndication than VTTBOTS, but it's clear that VTTBOTS did get syndication.

It should be noted that since VTTBOTS had it's first season in b&w, many syndicated markets did not run the early episodes as often as the last three years that were filmed in color. I've heard that some stations didn't run the early (and better episodes) at all because they lacked color.

I suspect that because "Voyage" was a 'near future' series and not set in space might account for why it didn't get the same play in syndication as "Lost in Space" or "Star Trek". Space shows still remained big even in the 70s.

Just glad we have the entire series on DVD to enjoy ALL the episodes.

The Seattle local CBS affiliate would show VOYAGE, M-F at 4 in the afternoon….starting in 1969
