What poor memories this crew have.

One week they're battling a giant sea monster, the next the ghost of a high seas pirate or aliens living under the sea bed. So why at the beginning of the following episode when a crew member reports seeing something odd like, I don't know, a mermaid tapping on the window say, he gets treated as though it was the most outlandish thing ever and his sanity called into question? Does no one remember their run-in with the man made of seaweed the week before?

It's just television. Try not to make too much sense of it. But, you're right. The crew should have been a little more seasoned after all the strange things they had seen.

For better or worse, the episodes seem to happen completely independently of each other. If we see an episode about a mermaid, that is a different universe from where the Sea View encountered a fossil man.

In the first season we don't have to go through those mental contortions (pretending previous monster threats to the Sea View did not happen) to make sense of what garp-26 mentioned.

In later episodes I can think of only one time that a previous episode's monster was referenced. That involved the second appearance of "Mr. Pim"--who could time-travel and show Nelson a scene from a previous adventure.
