Guest stars that 'made' the 60's

There are guest stars that were in so many series that, even though they never had series of their own, they are better known than the principal actors. Quite a few of them were on Voyage. Number 1, IMHO, would be:

Michael Ansara---He was everywhere in the 60's. He was in all of Irwin Allen's series and in the Voyage feature film. He was also Kang in the Star Trek episode "Day Of The Dove", and starred in the Outer Limits episode "The Soldier". Plus, he was the Blue Djin in "I Dream Of Jeannie".

A close second would be Warren Stevens---He started out as Doc Ostrow on Forbidden Planet and did tons of sci-fi in later years. He was in all of Irwin's series, in the Twilight Zone episode "Dead Man's Shoes", the Outer Limits episode "Keeper of the Purple Twilight", and the Star Trek episode "By Any Other Name".

Other actors we would see often in multiple series were:

Paul Comi--the overbearing Lt. Bishop in "Submarine Sunk Here", the escaped con in "Deadly Creature Below!", Lt. Stiles in the Star Trek episode "Balance Of Terror", the dead astronaut Marcusson in the TZ episode "People Are Alike All Over" and the copilot in the TZ episode "The Odyssey of Flight 33"

Paul Carr--Crewman Benson in "Terror On Dinosaur Island" and Lt. Kelso in the ST Episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before"

Malachi Throne--The Generalissimo in "The Magnus Beam", the Chinese scientist in "The Enemies", Blackbeard in "The Return Of Blackbeard", as well as Commodore Mendez in the ST episode "The Menagerie"

No doubt, there are quite a few others you can think of.

Victor Buono guest starred in "The Cyborg" episode of VTTBOTS, played Count Manzeppi in two episodes of The Wild Wild West, and appeared multiple times as King Tut in the campy Batman series.

I was a fan of Robert Duvall well before he finally got his well-deserved legendary stature as an actor because of his 60s TV guest star roles, from VOYAGE to THE OUTER LIMITS to WILD WILD WEST. But some other great guest star actors from the 60s:

Steve Ihnat
Frank Overton
Mark Richman
Doug Henderson

Look them up on IMDB. You'll be surprised at where they pop up.

In buying a lot of old 60s shows on DVD the last couple of years it is amazing the number of times you see the same faces popping up.Most of them never really had series of their own and rarely had starring parts in movies but there they were every week somewhere on the tube.

A few off the top of my head:

Albert Salmi
John Dehner
Lloyd Bochner
John Anderson

Alfred Ryder-as the ghostly U boat captain in 2 of the best episodes.

Walter Burke-in 2 roles in what may be the worst episode, playing "The terrible leprechaun"-and his nicer brother.

George Sanders and Vincent Price were probably the biggest "names" to guest in "Voyage".

i remember Vincent Price being in Voyage and Batman. he was well suited for both, the camp bastard.

I get the impression that Irwin Allen didn't care much about having any black faces on "Voyage". No Brock Peters, no William Marshall, no Percy Rodriguez or Frank Silvera.
These were talented, working actors who turned up as "guest star" of the week on other network shows at the time, but never on the Seaview.

reply

Well I doubt Irwin had a role written specifically for a black actor. However, after the third season, there was a black crewman or two (usually one of those nameless extras roaming the corridors.

Not to take the blame completely off Irwin Allen, but the studio where VOYAGE was filmed, 20th Century-Fox -- never had African Americans on any of their shows in any sizable capacity (not until the series Room 222* was created).

*Interesting coincidence as the actor who played Chief Sharkey on VOYAGE later became a producer/director on 'Room 222".

reply

Skip Homeier. He did three roles on VTTBOTS, two on Star Trek and a lot more in the 60s. But he seemed to retire in the early 1980s.

reply

Yeah, but he's not a black actor.

reply

I wasn't responding to the "black" subthread. Use the threaded view to see who's responding to whom.

Torin Thatcher

He appeared in Voyage, Lost in Space, Time Tunnel, Land of the Giants, Star Trek, Mission Impossible, Get Smart to name a few

I can add a couple of them:
Lawrence Montaigne:
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, "Man-Beast"
The Man from U.N.C.L.E., "The Maze Affair" and "The Virtue Affair"
The Invaders, "The Ransom" and "The Experiment"
Batman, as Mr. Glee in "The Joker's Epitaph" and "The Joker's Last Laugh"
The Time Tunnel, "Idol of Death" and "Massacre"
Star Trek ~ Although he's most memorable as Spock's Vulcan rival in "Amok Time", he's also a Romulan in "Balance of Terror". I always thought that he and Mark Lenard were perfect Vulcans, with Leonard Nimoy THE best, of course.

Barry Atwater:
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, "No Way Back" and "The Buccaneer"
Star Trek, "The Savage Curtain" as Surak
The Outer Limits, "Corpus Earthling"
The Man from U.N.C.L.E., "The Sort of Do-It-Yourself Dreadful Affair"
The Wild Wild West, "The Night of the Camera"
The Invaders, "The Organization"
Of course, he's probably best-known as Janos Skorzeny the vampire in "The Night Stalker" (1972).

Yes, there were many of these actors, some very distinctive, who showed up regularly. I know that I would highlight my copies of TV Guide to make sure I tuned in for their appearances.

Here's looking at it from a different angle. I just watched Hail to the Chief. It has more Star Trek TOS members (four) than any other show I've seen so far.

James Doohan - Lawrence Tobin (uncredited), played Scotty
John Hoyt - General Beeker, played Dr. Phillip Boyce in The Cage
Paul Carr - Casey Clark (uncredited), played Lt. Lee Kelso in Where No Man Has Gone Before
Nancy Kovack - Monique (sports car driver), played Nona in A Private Little War (Tyree's wife)

Episodes from The Outer Limits, Land of the Giants, VTTBS, The Time Tunnel, etc. that have three actors from ST TOS are a dime a dozen. Any others with with four or more?

reply

Paul Comi cropped up a lot, so Lawrence Montaigne and Perry Rodriguez. I always enjoy watching 1960s shows and seeing the same people crop up all the time. Vic Lundin is another.
