It was reported to me that Del Monroe, famous for playing the red-suited enlisted man, Kowalski on al four years of "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" died on June 5. Hopefully, there will be a big turn-out of his fellow 'sailors' at his services. I know that Del kept in touch with Allan Hunt and Terry Becker over the years.
Sadly, Del died from leukemia which was diagnosed after being in the hospital for another illness. More details: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0598489/
You're correct. Walter Pigeon played Nelson, and Robert Sterling played Crane. I remember reading that David Hedison was offered the part in the film, but turned it down because he didn't want to seem like he was working exclusively for Irwin Allen. But yeah, Del Monroe was the only actor to carry over from the film to the series.

I just found this notice. How sad it makes me, especially just as I'm watching "Voyage" on DVD for the very first time. In every episode, Del Monroe shows himself to be a solid and reliable supporting actor who is always very much "in the moment" for even the cheesiest and most ridiculous scenarios. At those times when the faces of leads Basehart and Hedison appear utterly or embarrassed to be there, or flabbergasted by the absurdity of the script, or even just plain bored, rock-steady Del is there in his red jumpsuit to take up the slack, making viewers believe in reality of the situation, to say nothing of the immediate danger posed by that wobbly rubber plant monster/heat alien/giant tentacled thing/mummy/outer space invader/ghost, and it hasn't gone unappreciated. I wish him the best as he embarks on a new, greater Voyage.
Called "Kowski" in the movie, always assumed it was the same character (though I have a hard time imagining Kowalski mutineeing under any circumstance.
