Curley Jones and Chief Sharkey

Simple: Ex-wrestler Henry Kulky who played Curley Jones died of a heart attack during the hiatus between year 1 and year 2.

Actually, actor James Doohan was offered the part of Chief Sharkey but turned it down because that same week he was offered and accepted the role of Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott of the Starship Enterprise on the original 'Star Trek' series, for which he became famous. I heard that Doohan picked Scotty over Sharkey because he found that Scotty was written as a more interesting character, with background, info etc. The role of Cheif Sharkey was then filled by Terry Becker. Interestingly, Sharkey is added to the series w/o any special introduction as if he was always there.

BTW, Doohan had played a part in two year-one episodes as 'Larry Tobin' an aide to the President of the United States.
