It's interesting, I note, that all cast lists for this program show David Hedison's character as "Captain Lee Crane." Lee Crane was only captain in title, as commanding officer of SSRN Seaview. His service rank was commander, one step down from captain.
Anyone else notice that?
In the US Navy, the captain of a vessel doesn't have to have the rank of Captain to Captain a ship or a boat. Being the Captain means that he is in command of the vessel, in this case, the boat. Even an ensign can captain a boat in the right circumstances. Lee Crane was the Captain of the Seaview, as such he is referred to as Captain Crane. However, when he introduces himself, he always says, I'm Commander Crane, Captain of the Seaview
