Sequel = Do. Not. Want.
Winning the Cold War should not have meant a needless sequel to Mary Poppins.

shareIt doesn't sound like a sequel so much as a different continuity. At least that's the way it was presented in the article I read.
Either way, if it's good I'll like it. If it's bad, I won't. It's not a hard metric.
They can't make a sequel. It's in P.L. Travers's will and testament. She made it clear her work was to never be made into films again. The law has to obey her wishes.
shareWell, "never" is a very long time.
Copyright protections aren't infinite (though they are pretty long these days). Once the copyrights expire and a work is in the public domain, I don't see how anyone could be stopped from making different versions (or borrowing characters) if they really wanted to. An individual doesn't get to override the entirety of copyright law indefinitely just by adding one sentence to their will.
Granted, I think that we probably are still a number of years away from Travers' book(s) being completely out in the public domain (but then again, I am certainly no expert on copyright law).

Its unnecessary for sure. But I would rather see a sequel of sorts than a straight remake.

If it ain't broke, DONT FIX IT! Case in point, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Leave Mary alone!
shareYou do know that there were several Mary Poppins books with numerous stories? A new movie would take on several of those. One I really liked was Maia of the Pleiades going shopping for Christmas gifts for her sisters with Mary's help. There was another one about gingerbread squares with stars on them and someone coming to get the stars to put them back in the sky. And Jane and Michael had a younger brother and sister--twins John and Barbara--so they could be the ones who go with Mary Poppins on her adventures.
Boo Hoo! Let me wipe away the tears with my PLASTIC hand!--Lindsey McDonald (Angel)
The book has many sequels.
