Watching for the first time

I’ve spent a lifetime ignoring this show, never liking it’s dated look and army theme.

But given its fame, I decided to watch it.

It’s not too bad. The Germans are funny, but the Allies are so-so.

I made the mistake of googling bob crane and discovering his sordid life and morder. I’ll try and ignore that as I watch.

The show has a live stage feel to it, like “here’s my joke, wait for audience to laugh.” Like a game of tennis, back and forward between the audience.

I like it enough to have just ordered the second season on dvd. My favorite performance is by Werner Klemperer in a wonderfully over the top performance as the camp's kommandant Col Klink. The show has a ton of energy and it's clearly not meant to be taken seriously, it's all in good fun, but I can see some people offended by it. Bob Crane certainly had his personal issues but he is instantly likeable as Hogan. John Banner is very funny as the hapless Sgt Schultz and the rest of the regulars are very good, too.

I just want to slap that smirk off of Crane's face.
