I remember reading that Lean's previous film, Lawrence of Arabia, was his favorite movie. I don't know about his feelings towards Doctor Zhivago.

In one documentary, Spielberg said he saw this film when he was around 18 and it changed his life. The imagery, the flawless cuts, the romantic sweep and overall distinctive Lean stamp were unbelievable to a young Spielberg.

He said it inspired him to get serious about filmmaking, and the end scene where you see Lara's daughter sling a balalaika onto her back is seen in Spielberg's first short film, Amblin (a guitar is slung over a back).

The images of the rainbow, the wilting yellow flowers and tall forest trees are seen in E.T., and seem to be intentional homages to this film.
