shareWell, obviously its a personal opinion, but if you look at some photos of the young Omar Sharif and then look at some photos of Rita as she was in the film, there is some resemblance. Her hair in the film has been colored a bit blonder too, to suggest a trait that she might have got from Lara.

The director obviously wanted the movie to have an all-star cast, so he chose Rita Tushingham, who was a very popular English actress at the time.
