The wife and kids

What happened to them after Paris, why not back with Uri?

reply

They were deported by the communists, and would never have been allowed back into the communist Russia. Tonya hoped that Yuri would join them in Paris, and gave a clue as to how to contact them, but, for whatever reason, he refused to leave Russia, so never saw them again.

In the book, although Yuri never leaves Russia, he does correspond with Tonya and his children and toys with the idea of trying to join them. However, in the book his situation is complicated by his taking up with a third woman, Marina, by whom he has two more children. I'm glad they omitted that plot line from the film.
