1) Why did the cavalry detachment attack the demonstration when there was no provocation? 2) How do the other filmed versions of this story compare to this particular movie?

1) Why did the cavalry detachment attack the demonstration when there was no provocation?
It was Tsarist policy to stomp out demonstrations, peaceful or otherwise. There were far more bloody instances of this. This was only one example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloody_Sunday_(1905)

I'm not aware of any other filmed versions of this story, are you? The novel is not yet in the public domain.
There are other films about the Russian Revolution and the period immediately before and after, but no other films of Pasternak's novel.

The 2002 Masterpiece Theatre miniseries (an adaptation based on the book, not on the 1965 film) is closer to the novel in many ways, and includes many of the smaller supporting characters that the film version did not. The only major changes that were made is that that there is no Yevgraf and the child of Yuri and Lara was a son, rather than a daughter.
I haven't seen the Russian version so I can't comment on it.
