Mishandled section?

When Ortiz begins to act like a dictator after hearing Nazerman's speech on money and God. I thought that section was handled in a very forced and crude way, with Ortiz almost comical in his sudden shift from a near innocent to callous authority. I understood it to be a metaphor for political brainwashing, but as Nazerman was just a private individual it was too easy for Ortiz to stab him in the back. I thought the whole section was insensitive considering manipulation of that sort happens on a bigger scale. Maybe the scenes in the apartment and pool hall could have been cut.
