Needs a new DVD release

Anybody know if there are plans to release a new Pawnbroker dvd? I saw parts of this movie when it played on TCM and I was shocked to see how good it was, considering NOBODY talks about this movie at all. I'd really love to see the whole thing, but I'm not buying a dvd that's only special feature is 'chapter selection'.

I agree. The current DVD has absolutely no extra features, and according to the back, it's a pan and scan version. I'm certain they could get Sidney Lumet to talk about the film (he's always been one of the more illuminating directors when it comes to talking about his films; always has lots of great stories, something intelligent to say), and among film historians at least the film seems to be highly acclaimed, so why does it have such a crappy DVD release?

I have the P&S version and it's ok. But I would buy a Widescreen version if it was released. Commentary would be great too.

According to the 'technical specifications' section of IMDB, this film's true aspect ratio is 1.33. Maybe it was shot open matte and shown in theaters at 1.85 - but on DVD, you should be able to zoom the image out on a widescreen TV without losing any information at the sides.

I'd love to hear Sidney Lumet's commentary along side "The Pawnbroker" as well, as he did recently for "Network" and "Dog Day Afternoon."

A lot of it has to do with which company owns the rights to this film, and whether or not they feel sales would justify a new DVD release. I'm sure Mr. Lumet could be persuaded to contribute illuminating commentary, perhaps for a price, a portion of the future profits for his heirs, a worthy film preservation project, or some favored charity.

I hope they get around to recording commentary for ALL his films, ("12 Angry Men," "Equus," "Murder On The Orient Express," "Fail Safe," "Serpico," and even the so-called "lesser" titles such as "The Wiz," "Power" and "Q&A,") whether they re-release these films on DVD in the near future or not. Eventually they will ALL be re-released.

The man is 83-years-old, and one of the last great directors of his generation still among the living. It would be a shame to forever miss this window of opportunity.

12 Angry Men and The Wiz were just recently re-released
