I read she died from scarlet fever, but does anyone knew if the captain or kids got it it too but recovered? I am assuming they were quarantined , since it was highly contagious.

Correct. In the novelization, a velociraptor bursts out of her urethra just as a planet-killing meteor slams into her forehead.
