Strange. I never really saw it quite that way, but I can see how it can be taken as a condescending view of one's neighbors.
I always felt that it was just an observation about life in the Valley. I think that's the way Carole King felt when she wrote the song.

Hi MMC. I really loved the Monkees when I was little, impossible for me to pick any single song.
Heard Stepping Stone on the radio about a month ago, harder edged than most of their stuff.
I liked what Nesmith brought to the group, like the song Sunny Girlfriend.
Shades Of Grey was introspective and had a bit of Peter in it.
Funny how the song I Wanna Be Free should be a song of liberation, but it's delivered so sad, like being free is the equivalent of being alone and rejecting someone. Nesmith's Different Drum (Linda Ronstadt) was a more direct take on the same subject.
Last Train To Clarksville is about a guy going to Vietnam, or it can be seen that way.
But I never liked She very much. I thought it was an awkward opener to their second album. That's just me, of course. But I've been pondering re-acquiring my old Monkees albums on CD. Fun stuff.

I like She. But...as a woman who had her heart broken recently it has a little more meaning for me now. before it was a decent song. Now it's: "OMG they know my pain!" lol

There are so many songs, it's hard to decide on one. My songs change with my moods, haha. I do listen to 'She Hangs Out' a lot. It's on my walking playlist. It's so fun and bouncy with a good groove.

I paraphrase but,

She said, once I loved, but love is dead
And I whispered, sometimes love is only sleeping

Ooh aaah ooh aaah (Ode to a Poop Flinging)

or maybe

It Was the Best of Times, It Was the Blurst of Times.

I'm up in the air over those two.

Saturday's Child and Words are my two favorite Monkee songs.

I'm a believer. Dunno why, not a fan of pop music but this is just one of those tunes I find running through my head sometimes.
