Mannix's Cars


Since right now the series is not being aired or available on DVD, I need help to settle a friendly bet. I think the following are the cars that Mannix drove during the series (the colors aren't part of the bet, just for fun). My friend disagrees on a couple of them. Please let me know if I have all of these right. Also just for fun, I bet him I could name most of the cars that Peggy drove.

Here's my list for Mannix:

Bonus Pick- Pilot: Dark Green '66 or '67 Mercury Comet Cyclone
Season 1: Silver Olds Toronado roadster (George Barris custom model)
Season 2: Dark Green '68 Dart GT convertible
Season 3: Dark Green '69 Dart GT convertible (you could tell the difference by the sidelights)
Season 4: Dark Green '70 'Cuda convertible
Season 5: Dark Green '71 'Cuda convertible (my favorite)
Season 6: Dark Green '72 'Cuda convertible (custom job because Plymouth didn't make 'Cudas in convertibles after '71)
Season 7: Gold/Tan '73 Challenger Rallye with sunroof
Season 8: Dark Blue '74 Camaro
Bonus Pick- In the "Diagnosis: Murder" episode a Silver Camaro Z28 convertible.

My friend disagrees on the Darts, Challenger and Camaro. He says he drove a Satellite in Seasons 2 & 3 and 'Cuda hardtops in Seasons 7 & 8

Now for Peggy:

The first couple of seasons she drove a Volvo, then a Valiant in at least Season 3 maybe also in Season 4, then either a Plymouth Cricket or Dodge Colt (similar look and you usually just saw it in the carport next to Mannix's car) for Seasons 4 (maybe) and 5 thru 7, and a Vega in Season 8.

So let me know how I did. And YES I know I have too much time on my hands!!!!

During the 73-74 season Mannix not only drove a camparatively "tame" no frills Camaro, if there ever was such a thing,but could only drive it fifty five miles an hour. As a result of the gas shortage and the Arab oil embbargo, push prices at the pump past fifty five cents a gallon, the networks agreed, or more likely were pressured by the FCC, not to include chase scenes in their action adventure programs (I'm not joking). Full out gas guzzling muscle cars were also frowned upon. The only autommotive action on the show, that year, resulted from bad guys opening the hood or climbing under the car and releasing various fluids always resulting in break failure on steep winding roads. Sometimes it seemed Mannix was being stocked by a demonic pit crew from hell. This also may esplain why Peggy drove an ultra lame Vega during the last seasons of the show; a small car that got worse mileage then many modern SUVs. Hey if it was small, cramped and looked slow it saves energy, right? Who knows how much gas was saved by the no chase scene/ uncool car rules (LOL).

Just remember: I was as good as any and better then most-Vincent Freeman in Gattaca

I figured that the change from Chrysler cars to GM cars was probably due to a change in contracts the studios had with the car companies. It seemed that most of the series that used Chrysler cars in the early 70's went to mainly Chevys in the mid-70's. There was always the "Vehicles provided by the XXXX Corporation" in the end credits.

I think a similar thing happened during the course of "Walker, Texas Ranger". When it started, Walker drove a Chevy truck and Trivette various GM sports cars for the first couple of seasons then they switched to Dodges for the remainder of the series run.

He drove a Satellite in at least one season. I know this because it was my
first car. I had a green one too.

I think you are right on all the cars. As far as I remember, he never drove a Satellite as a regular car.

But I think Peggy drove a Simca 1100 before she switched to a Plymouth Cricket. Both were Chrysler Europe imports in the late 60s - early 70s, the former from France, the latter a re-badged Hillman Avenger from the UK.

I just got through some of the DVD set. You're right on all the cars except:

- The Season 5.5/Season 6 green convertible was actually a factory-made '71 'Cuda. It was updated with a '72 Cuda front and rear. I'm sure lots of people who knew Chrysler discontinued convertibles after '71 thought it was a custom one-off.

- Peggy drove a Plymouth Valiant in Season 7.

- Mannix rented and borrowed various cars, including Satellites, but it was never his regular ride.

One thing I noticed from watching the First Season on DVD was that for roughly the first half of the season Mannix didn't have one car he drove on a regular basis. The Toronado showed up briefly in a couple of the first few episodes, but he mainly drove a succession of cars (including a tan Comet convertible, various Ford Custom and Fairlane sedans)from the Intertect motor pool.

The Toronado started to be used regularly in the shows filmed starting in '68. Coinsidentially that's when the incidential cars that were used (police cars, cars driven by characters, background cars, Wickersham's car)switched from Ford Motor Company cars to Chrysler Corporation cars.

Overall, I wasn't impressed with the Toronado. I don't think it was one of George Barris' better cars. All he did was chop the top off, add a new hood and grill, and fabricate a large boot to cover the back seat. The one time they showed it with the top up it looked like rubbish. Plus they never showed it in too many driving scenes, so I wonder if the modifications left it too unstable to drive other than in a straight line or basic turns. They should have stayed with the dark green Comet from the pilot.

The Barris Toronado drop top was exclusive to season 1 when Mannix worked for Intertec. Though not featured in every episode, it was highlighted in the opening credits and also had a static shot in the closing credits.

After he came out on his own, this was dropped and Mannix drove Darts, Cudas, the Challenger and Camaro.

Peggy moved from a Simca 1100 to a Plymouth Cricket to a Dodge Colt to a Chevy Vega.

The GM cars replaced the MoPars for the final 1974 - 1975 season.

Agree with the comments regarding the ungainliness of the Barris Toronado and the fuel crisis affecting the car chase/action sequences.

Still, Mannix remains a classy classic 40 years ater its debut.

IIRC AMT or Revell (one of the popular model kit companies in the '60s) did a plastic hobby kit of Mannix' car. The kit was of course of the George Barris customized Toronado. Man, I wish I had that right now....it'd probably go for big bucks on ebay!

..........The Mannix Tornado was made by MPC (Model Products Corporation). MPC was taken over by Ertil/AMT a decade and a half later. At the present time Round Two owns the molds if they still exist. It doubtlessly would go for hundreds of dollars on EBay or other auction site.

I'm watching some of the 1969 episodes on CLOO now. The car he drives is a green huge convertible. I recall the Dart as being a compact, so I looked up some pictures. Here is a Satellite:

The car he's driving in 1969 looks like the larger Satellite, but apparently it was a customized Dart. The Dart's wheelbase is only 5" shorter than the Satellite.

This is an old thread, and I am remembering from watching the original broadcast of the shows. Im Pretty sure the second car was a GTX convertible. The GTX was a slightly more luxiourious version of the Road Runner, and slightly less boy racer in styling. If i remember, the 440 v8 was standard, the 440 6 pack and 426 hemi were options.
It was a fitting follow on to the Toronado. i had stopped watching by the Challenger days. The Road Runner was a "kids" car, so it made sense that Plymouth would push the GTX. Also the Roadrunner was only available as a coupe, the GTX as coupe and convertible, and Mannix obviously needed a convertible. Both Roadrunner and GTX were based on the Sattellite chassis. I hope this helps. i havent checked the imcdb but i will.

I'm not great at car models but one thing I noticed
on the car he had until Season 6 was the liscence plate ' 714 AQU '

Since I'm really new to the series via DVD (but have known
of it for years), I took a guess as to what that may have meant.

I concluded that 714 is a California
Telephone Area Code and AQU meant "A Question Unanswered".

Perfect plate for a P.I.  Then they changed it in this final season I'm watching.

Go for it or just be a gopher!
