Katherine Houghton (Hepburn's niece) was SO BAD it made my teeth hurt. She is such an air-headed ninny it makes you wonder why this Black God who works for the United Nations, fantastically good looking PHD yadda yadda SEES in her. How can you sum it up? She (and the character as written) have no depth and no wit.
shareI didn't think she was THAT much of a disaster as an actress, but I didn't understand the direction she was apparently given. I think her blitheness over the situation was meant to be a counterpoint to everyone else's reaction. I couldn't help but think, however,that she was thinking that her family's wealth and power would protect her from the cold, cruel world.

She and Poitier are not well matched at all, it spoils the story for me. her character should have been better written. i think someone on another thread suggested Audrey Hepburn would have been good as the daughter, if she had a more substantial role. or alternqtively, they should have made her boyfriend a more ordinary person, a fellow student perhaps, played by someone younger than poitier.
