During the Ape / Werewolf wars that took place sometime between Taylor's time and this movie? The apes did it to take out the wolves source of power maybe?

No, the moon was destroyed by the virus that wiped out mankind.

Any time a relative suffers, it makes me feel bad. Old Uncle Luno didn't deserve that fate.
