most terrifying movie ive ever seen

i remember seeing this movie on tv many many years ago (mid 70s?)
the ending shot really i mean really scared me
this is the most effective horror movie ive ever seen

no blood no guts no axes or screams in the night
just the terrifying realization that insanity is very real
and that there are those of us out here who witness it
while hopefully not becoming entrapped by it

remarkable story and film

peace and mental wellness to us all

That sums up this film perfectly. How the suburban dream can quickly become a nightmare.

The 1st post sums it up brilliantly, this is my favourite film ever and it carries in it every emotion possible including terror.

Watching it AGAIN! right now and just looked up IMDB for some new posts...Yes, this movie is frightening..and hauntingly real for alot of people. Burt is AMAZING as usual.

thats EXACTLY how i felt! it's an unsettling movie to say the least. i really felt his pain & bewilderment>what great acting! the final scene with him turning the locked doorknob & wailing like a wounded animal was the most terrifying of all. i wondered while watching if that was actually burt lancaster's voice. the moaning/wailing at the end was so haunting it just didnt sound like him at all.

i must say that i was disappointed in the film, but i'm a long-time cheever fan, so my opinion kinda doesn't count (b/c i'm in the "it can't touch the source material" camp).

"Rampart: Squad 51."
