Walter Matthau super stud?

I can never get over the movies that make stars like Walter Matthau (who is a fine comedic and dramatic actor) into a super stud. I don't believe it here that's for sure, and I didn't believe it in A New Lief either.

Or Plaza Suite. Or was it California Suite?

Get me a bromide! And put some gin in it!

That's the movies for ya!

I believe it. He is quite charming. I assume your main reason for disbelieving or not being able to buy it is because of his looks but it ain't always about that.

I know, I can't believe either of these two women, Goldie or Ingrid, would find him a dreamboat......I can imagine someone like James Garner in the role

Does he have other things going for him? Successful? His character was a charming guy?

reply

Similar to his role in 'Hello Dolly' a year prior. Dolly (Barbra Streisand) wasn't really attracted to Horrace physically (nor were the other women, it was implied), but they were attracted to his wealth knowing he was thrifty and he could provide. Matthau played that character perfectly, as he did in this film.

reply

What made it believable in 1969 is that he was a dentist! That was attractive enough.

Also, keep in mind that this is a comedy. You cast a top comedian for this role, not a pretty face (or body).

reply

His character has money. So, the women are going to come a-running.

reply

Considering this is a comedy, I thought Matthau being the object of desire for all these women was part of the joke.
