How in the world . . .

Part of the reason is it's hard to believe, even for a comedy. For instance, I can't believe an eleven year old kid could drive that difficult car around so easily (the clutch wasn't even mentioned, let alone practiced). But it's enjoyable anyway, just not great enough for a rating of 7. And McQueen was playing it so young he seemed hard pressed. Should have just played it more simply, as his own age, instead of trying so hard to live up to the book. Probably why he said, later, he was like the 'village idiot'. I agree with him to some extent, but still it's fun to watch.

Learning something new isn't any different for a kid than it is for an adult. At that time cars were relatively new to most people. If Boon, Ned, and the other people who drove that car were able to pick it up fairly quickly, so too could an eleven year old. The only issue would be his ability to reach the foot controls while being able to look out of the windshield but he seemed tall enough.

I didn't read the book but from what I saw in the movie, the character Boon is a man-child. He's an adult who still behaves like an irresponsible child. I didn't see a problem with the way McQueen played him because that's what came across onscreen. He was thirty-nine when the movie was made. The character may be younger than that but not much. The guy who plays Ned, Rupert Crosse, was forty-two at the time the movie was made. Neither of them acted their age nor did their characters.
