Relation to the TV series

I don't know anything about MASH the movie OR the TV series and wanted to ask...

As far as I understand it, the "franchise" is mainly known for its TV series, but what started it all? The movie, released in 1970? Or was the series first?

Why did this franchise become so popular? I often heard about the series, but never watched it or the movie.

It was a novel by a veteran Korean War doctor, then it was the 1970 film directed by Robert Altman. Then in 1972, it was made into the successful TV series which ran until 1983. The series departed from the movie in several ways, by consolidating certain characters, adding some new characters, and basically doing what we today would call a "reboot."

Very few people involved in the 1970 film ended up having anything to do with the TV series.
