the whole Painless suicide thing. . .

maybe i'm a total blockhead, but i didn't get any of it. can someone explain it?

BOO!

reply

What's to get?

The dentist, who was legendary for his well-endowment and sexual prowess, has a bad night (i.e., he couldn't get it up) and starts doubting his own sexual orientation.
He decides to commit suicide.
His friends humor him, going so far as to arrange a fake suicide on his behalf ("the Black Capsule") and instead of dying, he has sex with a beautiful nurse who restores his self-confidence.

End of story.

reply

Yeah, this was my favourite "segment": The story of Painless.

It was a truly wonderful short story inside this military portrait and Painless is my favourite character.

reply

it was kind of stupid, but it lead to the "last supper" scene & nurse dish helicopter take off scene

reply

i love the face of dish when she leaves ahahahhahahHAHHAHAHAHAH

reply

That's the kind of facial expression that I like to see, the look of complete satisfaction.

Brains are good, especially when sauteed with caramelized onions.

Yup, that's it.

Completely retarded sequence. And unbelievably dated.

reply

Totally agree--I liked it for the very same reasons you did, especially the "dated" quality that it conveys so well!

I thought it was extremely stupid, and further proof that many men think the entire world revolves around their *****. Grow up. It doesn't.

reply

I think it's the best scene in the film, and it led me to believe that M*A*S*H is one of the few perfect movies I've seen. Every persons life is filled with incredibly bizarre pointless events and this movie shows that that can even happen in the time of war.

reply

Actually, from a biological sense, the whole world does evolve around a man's penis. From a biological sense our entire purpose is to exist, procreate, and die. Well, if you can't procreate, from a biological sense that is something that is difficult to go through. And also, Painless isn't supposed to be like a 50 year old man who goes impotent. He was a 30 year old (or younger) guy who had never failed at sex before. Had he continued to fail at sex, well, that's pretty devastating.

reply

Try having a bad DECADE, though impotence isn't the issue; just being an all out failure is worse. I'm surprised I'm still alive. If I only had friends like those in the 4077th... Maybe the characters aren't as disgusting and vile as everyone claims on this board.

reply

"Maybe the characters aren't as disgusting and vile as everyone claims on this board."

Baloney! That fake suicide for Painless is the ONLY good thing Hawkeye does. Just like the only good thing Trapper does is punch out Frank Burns on Boone's behalf.

And Lt. Dish is a common harlot. She'd sleep with anybody, although she was reluctant to sleep with Painless during that scene? Why?? Painless was more attractive than Hawkeye. I hate Dish. In my new MASH story, I'm having her die off.

reply

Yeah..... good luck with that.

No, no - Pillage first, then burn! Stupid Vikings...

reply

Thank you. She's gonna get it. I'm gonna write a fit end for her.

reply

what evidence is there that she sleeps with everyone?
i dont remember there being a wh0re meeting with her showing her having it off with every other doctor

you are so utterly obsessed with this film its unhealthy

reply

She's a married woman who'd gladly sleep with somebody like Hawkeye, that says alot for her character.

"i dont remember there being a wh0re meeting with her showing her having it off with every other doctor"

They probably cut that part out.

"you are so utterly obsessed with this film its unhealthy"

I couldn't dislike this movie more.

reply

I couldn't dislike this movie more.

Of course you could. There isn't anything that anyone dislikes that they couldn't dislike just a little more. What if a heavy film can containing the movie fell off a shelf and broke your big toe? I'll bet you'd dislike it more then.

...Riiiiiight.

Besides, if you really disliked the movie that much, you'd probably post about it a lot more.

What else is there to say? I've already told you the concept was great, but the execution sucked. The performances were bad and unrehearsed, the director couldn't direct a movie to save his life, the story sucked, the plot was scarce, you can't hear what the characters are saying because they all talk over one another, the characters are unlikeable, particularly that tart Dish.

It's not a good movie. It would've been a better movie had they got a better director. Why Robert Altman? His field was independent filmmaking. They could've gotten somebody good like Mel Brooks, but I guess being true to Richard Hooker and his books, they lowered their standards.

I'd say the only likeable characters were Judson, Vollmer and Mulcahy.

reply

I agree that those characters weren't as likable as Hawkeye, Radar, Henry, and the rest of the gang. But they're still pretty funny. I think I'll go watch it again right now!

Hawkeye, Radar, Henry and the rest of the gang weren't in the least bit likeable.

In the movie he was a decent guy, but was more or less a fool whom nobody took seriously.

reply

That's what I liked about his character, too. Everyone seemed to not take him seriously, yet they liked him and never actually poked fun at him.

They still disrespected him, what with that nickname and cursing right in front of him.

reply

Yeah, it was cool that they would make him part of the gang and everything!

What's the use in talking to you? You twist around everything I say to make it seem good. You like this movie, I hate it.

You do realize you're saying this movie is bad when over 25,000 other people have decided it should be rated a 7.5 on IMDB, right? 7.5 is a really impressive rating with that many votes.

I'm not saying that the consensus is the only correct opinion, but, you do look like an idiot when you come out opposite to the consensus without making any concession for the qualities of a movie that over 25... thousand... people have already voiced as one of their favorites.

I guess patching up soldiers and saving lives doesn't count as doing good?
I'm just asking.

Well maybe if we saw more of that and less of Trap and Hawk getting drunk and thinking up new ways of pissing everybody off.

reply

Besides....why the hell would you spend this much time posting in a forum for a movie if you hated the movie?

PS: Don't feed the trolls!

a ground braking movie,

perhaps not the best war film ever, as ExplorerDS6789 claims, but still very good.

"Dish was completely willing to sleep with Painless when she saw his cock."

I thought that was the reason for his wanting to commit suicide: he couldn't "get it up".

Shut your mouth, child.

Painless Pole the camp dentist failed to become erect for the third time in sexual encounter and feared he was suffering from "Latent Homosexuality"and was covering it up with"Don Juanism". Believing that it was only a matter of time before he would be compelled to act on it he asked the Swamp Rats to help him commit suicide.

Trapper, Hawkeye and Duke wanting to help Painless but not willing to kill him find a third option and staging a suicide and manipulate Lt. Dish into reaffirming his hetrosexual impulses.
