Quick review

Elliott Gould plays Hiram Jaffee married to Dolly (Paula Prentiss) - they are about to move from their New York apartment into another and, clearly, Hiram is having a lot of anxiety about it. In fact, it's a catalyst for all sorts of fears and worries to surface in Hiram's psyche and what follows is a free-form, surreal, blackly comic-fantasy-drama in which we're not certain what's "real" and what is Hiram's feverish imagination. Poorly received in 1970, but it works delightfully for me 50 years on. But, then, I like "inner space" stories. Perhaps the critics at the time were traumatized by Gould's massively carpeted back as he has plenty of shirtless scenes! Catchy theme by Marvin Hamlisch.
