Favorite song?

Besides the main theme, what would you consider to be your favorite song (or songs) from the show?

reply

The Road Sign song: "No right turn...no left turn...what do you do?"

There was a song/sketch with Morgan Freeman and one of the kids. They played father & son, and the son asks him for money. Morgan (father) launches into an angry song that went something like "Spend Spend Spend, you're spending too much money, Lend lend lend....." can't remember the rest. Then the kid says it was to buy a birthday present for Morgan/father. Then Morgan pulls out his wallet, gives the kid the money, then looks innocently into the camera and says something like "Oh well, let him learn the value of a dollar" or something like that. While I don't recall all of the words to the song, it still sticks with me after 30 years.

I have the DVD set, so I find myself thinking in terms of songs that they left out, that I missed.

Furtunately, they included "All for One and One for All" (the Three Muskateers song), and "Funny Guy" and "Whistle".

They left out:

The -ly song by Tom Lehrer.
Tilt.
Sloppy, Sloppy, Slob.
A Cabbage and a Lettuce Look the Same.

Lyrics to any of the above greatly apreciated.

So far, these are the ones that I am missing the most.

Questions:

WHO IS the performer in "Funny Guy"?
WHO IS the guy in the car during the street sign song who shrugs at "What can you do?"

I always remembered the words to "It rains whereever I go" as "Wherever I go it rains." I must be confusing the lyrics with those from another song. Any ideas?

Another wierd memory thing... I must be confusing Luis Avalos with another actor that looks similar... is there an actor that plays a mexican gardener on some TV series that resembles him? I always recalled that he was the grandfather on A.K.A. Pablo... but again, my memory must be corrrupted.

I believe that it was Judy Graubert on the Miracle Whip commercial of last decade ("Lettuce, lettuce, lettuce, Tomato, tomato, tomato").

Lestly, does the single-DVD release, "Best of the Best of The Electric Company" have ANY material that is NOT on the 4-DVD set?

reply

LY was on the Electric Company?

Oh, my, let's see.

I'm afraid I have to start with the final verse.

Youre in a very dark room, and sitting (seems like the word was standing, but Dracula was sitting) in the gloom, is DRACULA, so how do you say goodbye? Immediately! Immediately!! Imediate-ly, BYE BYE!

He was in a pie eating contest and only had one slice to eat to win, How do you eat it?

Eagerly, eagerly, eager- l y.

Something made him cry and I can't recall what. How do you start to cry?

Quietly, quietly, quiet - l y.

He had to open a door and either a porcupine or a lion was sleeping in front of the door, how do you open the door?

Carefully, carefully, careful - l y.

He had to cry quietly because another animal was in there and he didn't want to wake it up.

He fell in the water! His boat capsized. he had to wait for his clothes to dry? How do you wait for your clothes to dry?

d-d-d-d-patiently, d-d-d-d-patiently, d-d-d-d-patient - l y.

Each word was sung with the feeling of what the little cartoon man was going thru. He cried quietly, he was shivering as he sang patiently, and so on.

The theme song also included these words:
"We're gonna tell you the truest word
that you ever heard anybody say!"

That's straight from a decades-old memory.

This was a great show---not only educational, but entertaining for all ages.

Can't remember if these were included.

There is one song that I really like by the Short Circus, but I don't know the name of it. The words go like this:
When you're feeling really scared and you're shaking like a leaf and you want a little comfort and you're looking for relief.
There's no need for tears, to get rid of your fears singing la, la la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
(Then Melanie Henderson has a solo part): We all have to go to doctors though I'd really rather not. Because the first thing Monday morning I have to get a shot. Since I have to stay, I'll look the other way. (All sing) Singing la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
Singing la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la. Singing la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
(Then Denise Nickerson has a solo part): There is nothing quite as frightening as a roller coaster ride when you've got no one to talk to and you've got no place to hide. While flying through the skies I simply shut my eyes (All sing)singing la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
Singing la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la. Singing la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
When you're feeling really scared and your heart begins to beat. You really want to take off, but you just can't move your feet. There's no need to run there's a way to have fun singing la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
Singing la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la. Singing la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.

I liked so many of the songs on "The Electric Company". One of my all-time favorites, however, was Easy Rider's song ("Easy Reader, that's my name. I said um, um, um. Readin', readin', that's my game, I said um, um, um. Right to left, left to right, that readin' stuff is outta sight! Easy Reader, that's my name. I said um, um, um.").

Oh my gosh! I totally forgot that "L - Y" was an E-Co song! I *loved* that, "T I O N Shun Shun Shun Shun" ("if you put it in the water, you'll - you'll get pollution!"), and "Pun Pun Pun Punctuation". But my sis and I were particularly fond of that song (can't remember the name) where they showed two silhouettes, each one enunciating one sound of a word to form one word. Geez, I'm not being clear, but it was like this:

Kuh ----- are ----- Car

Truh ----- e ----- Tree

Fruh ----- og ----- Frog

Of course, being immature, we had to do this with other words...

Shhh ----- It ------ (that's right!) Ship ;-)

Man, I miss this show.

They're all going to laugh at you!

I like any song on TEC that June Angela (Julie) sang! :)

I like one performed by the Short Circus. I think it's called Smile. Some of the lyrics are something along the lines of:

Smile in a special kind of way
Smiling makes us happy

I remember the sketch that accompanied this one. Clips of it were sometimes shown at the closing credits of the last one or two seasons.

It's amazing I still remember so much of this show more than twenty five years later!

Since I watched from season 1 until it left PBS,I'll clear up an arguement first:

Rita Moreno: Carmella

Morgan Freeman: "Mark"

Luis Avalos: Roberto (Played the principal on "Hangin' With Mr. Cooper".)

(Luis from,"Sesame Street",was played by actor Emilio Delgado, who actually played a "bad guy" in an episode of "Hawaii Five 0")

Jimmy Boyd: Andy (and J. Arthur Crank)

Skip Hennent:J.J. (Voice of the adult animated,"Fritz The Cat" movies.)

Judy Graubart: "Winnie" and played Jennifer of The Jungle. (Small role in Al Pacino's 1982 movie "Author! Author!")

Hattie Winston:Valerie the librarian. Most recently was Margaret on CBS comedy "Becker".

The other African American actress was called "Brenda" & also was "Vi" of Vi's diner (short for Violet). Strangely, she's not mentioned in the cast list here on IMDB. I'll have to check the DVD for her name.

Now,my favorite song of all form The Electric Company;"BOOM"! by The Short Circus. Closest thing to "real" modern rock & roll that they ever sang, unforgettable special effects too.

I recall Hattie Winston's character's name being "Sylvia."
