Dumb question re. subtitles... I think?

Watching the Netflix stream that has just been added, and there are lengthy scenes in France where the French dialogue is not subtitled (i.e., I have no idea what they're saying). Was this the case in theaters in the 70's (the original theatrical release) or is this negligence on Netflix's part? Just wondering... any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Right. Well, I have to-- I have to go now, Duane, because I, I'm due back on the planet Earth.

I recently re-watched on Nflix also with English subtitles on (my hearing is bad) and noticed the same (no translation of the French.) When I turned off the English subtitles the translated French subtitles would appear.

I'm watching it on Retro, one of the high-definition channels from U.S. network Encore.

The French subtitles are relatively large, in white, and have outlining.

I'm guessing there's an error with the copy you saw.
