Is it ok to watch by an 9 yr old?

I mean it's rated PG but the premise made me think twice.

reply

I wouldn't recommend it for a kid that young.

The main character repeatedly stages fake suicides; these have some intense and disturbing images, and in one case is very bloody. It's not appropriate viewing for a child.

reply

This movie is not right for children for several reasons:

1. It deals extensively with suicidal tendencies and attempts.

2. It's about a potentially sexual relationship between a young man who is 20 and a woman who is 80 (! That's not a typo: 80!).

3. Not only are the above things likely to confuse or disturb children, but even if it doesn't confuse or disturb them, I simply don't think there will be anything there of interest for them.

No. Unless you want to deal with the question: What is he doing with Grandma?

Signature under construction.

Thinking back when I was 9, I'm only 16 so not long ago, I would have been fine with it. Chances are your kid knows all about not just sex, but the suicide and stuff. I don't think it's something he would enjoy it though, but he can handle the content.

As a nine year old I would have been grossed out about the suicide attempts and the sexual relationship. (I don't get why people question if they had sex or not. It seemed obvious from them kissing to fireworks showing to Harold naked in bed beside Maude.) so I'd say it's not for a nine year old. Haha there's virtually nothing in the movie that a kid would seriously enjoy anyway so why watch it with a child? Get a good kid movie and watch that with them. Save watching Harold and Maude for when your kid is maybe a teen or older. I was 20 when I first saw the film and I enjoyed it. If I'd seen it when I was younger I wouldn't have understood the humor or the relationship.

I saw this movie when I was ten and I loved Bud Cort but also fully understood that it was only a film and knew it was all fake. It would just depend on their understanding of comedy and if they also saw Jaws or Poltrigiest when it came out too, which I did in the 70's 80's.
