Parallels between Harold & Maude (1971) and Fight Club (1999)

I loved this movie! From the start of this movie, I could not stop - but drawing parallels between H & M and Fight Club. Here are a few:

1. Protagonists of both movies "have it all" in life but are looking for something different.
2. Both protagonists take refuge in alternative therapy / finding solace in other peoples times of trouble. e.g.Ed Norton goes to these group therapy sessions, Harold goes to funerals.
3. Both protagonists fake their own death. Harold - more for fun and Ed Norton to alter his life style.
4. Both have unconventional girl friends - who are reckless and not afraid of death. e.g. Marla is a heavy smoker, the scene in which she crosses the road (not afraid the car would hit her, etc.). Muade is a crazy stunt driver, etc.

I know the topics of both movies were quite different - but i thought there were certain parallels - that i've listed above.

Cheers!

This is crazy, I literally just came here to address the parallels between the funerals and support meetings in the two films and you've already done it!
I agree wholeheartedly, even if it wasn't deliberate, it's certainly interesting.

Are you two the same person?

There are two kinds of people in the world, those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

Haha! I'm watching it on Netflix right now and I just had the same thought.

I suspect that Palahniuk was inspired regarding the support groups by Harold & Maude. He'd certainly be aware of this movie and has probably seen it. It's the only real similarity but I have no doubt it's not accidental.

I just saw it on Netflix and couldn't stop comparing to Fight Club. Definitely inspiration.
