Vivian Pickles

She is extraordinary as Harold's mother, and she should have received an Oscar nomination. Her scenes with Harold are the real heart and soul of this film. The scenes with Maude are a bit flat in comparison.

She was great as Harold's mom. Funny too.

Her scenes are actually my favorite in the movie. The dating service questionnaire scene is my favorite!

reply

She was quite beautiful too, I think. She was playing the character for laughs, of course, with certain exaggerations, but I also find the character of the mother rather elegant and a person of exquisite taste. She really didn't deserve the contempt that Harold had for her.

reply

Yes. She was wonderful. My favorite character.

Brilliant casting.

She was wonderful! As mwlindsey2000 stated, the dating service questionnaire scene was my favorite as well.

I couldn't agree more: it was fun to see Harold and Maude together, but it was the mother who really made me love this movie! The actress who played her was totally awesome and hilarious. My favorite character in it, by far.

I loved those mother/son scenes as well because the acting is so good.

The other night I was watching a film called Mr. Nobody starring Jared Leto and, lo and behold, came a scene reminiscent of Harold and Maude. The son around fifteen was lying on the floor with fake blood running from this neck and face. His mother walks in and proceeds to talk to him as if nothing happens. Eventually he tires of his charade and gets up.

It was more than reminiscent, it was a rip-off; but I still enjoyed the scene because the acting was also very good.

reply

She steals the scenery.

reply

Quite so, she even upstaged the Suset Blvd moment....;O)

I enjoyed Vivian Pickles performance the best. Her attitude towards Harold's fake suicides are the best thing about the movie IMO. The scene I like most is her nonchalantly swimming past Harold's floating 'lifelessly' in the swimming pool.
