Scene in Maude's trailer

As many times as I have seen this movie I have never been able to figure out what Harold was doing when Maude was getting the pie. He was running his hands down the tall wooden statue and tried to stick his head down in the middle and was moaning, can anyone explain this?

"Oh Blanche? You know we got rats in the cellar"

I presumed that he was thinking of pretending to put himself in danger by getting his head caught so that Maude could show her concern for him (like his Mother did with the explosion and most likely the earlier "deaths" he created).

Harold chose not to pretend for her and I took it as an indication that Harold was choosing to grow up and experience affection in a different form than what he got from his mother.

That makes sense, thanks

Watch it again, and you will see that it is actually a sculpture representing women's genitalia. Harold doesn't realise this at first, and touches and interacts with it as Maude implores him, and you then see it register on his face. After hesitating momentarily, he continues to touch it lovingly and even places his head into what would be Maude's vagina, either metaphorically making love to her, or metaphorically "going back" into the vagina, as it were. This experience is perhaps the most powerful example of Harold being "woken up" out of his stupour by having come into contact with Maude.

There have been various other posts discussing this, and it is fairly well accepted that it is a sculpture of female genitalia; Harold's motivations (above) are my interpretations, though other people have suggested them too.
